Refrigerator Makeover

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

This post is long overdue! Remember when I mentioned that I painted my refrigerator with chalkboard paint here? Well, I am finally going to tell you about it! Exciting, I know.

When Dane purchased the house it came with all of the appliances. However, not long after moving in the pretty, white fridge kicked the bucket. So, Dane went fridge hunting and found a fridge that worked perfectly for $100...not something you can pass up. The only problem...it was tan, which didn't exactly match the rest of our black and white appliances. It was fine for a while, but after I moved in I decided it could use a facelift. So, I started looking at ways to paint a fridge, and I came across this post on The Handmade Home (this blog is filled with great ideas).

It made perfect sense to paint the fridge with chalkboard paint.

•It would match the rest of the appliances. (clearly one of my big worries)

•It would be a great place for the weekly menu and shopping list.

•It would keep kids entertained when they came over to visit.

After some convincing Dane agreed to let me do it, and it was surprisingly easy (the painting, not the convincing). I picked up a can of chalkboard paint, foam rollers, and chalk at WalMart for about $15 dollars, and got to work! At first I thought it was going to take forever. The first coat went on very thin, but I followed the instructions and continued painting. The paint dries very quickly, but you have to wait several hours before you paint the next coats...I ended up painting 3 coats.

I absolutely love the way it turned out! At first I was hesitant to let kids color on it because 1. I thought their aggressive scribbling would take the paint off (it hasn't) and 2. I didn't want them to think it was okay to color on someone else's fridge (so far that hasn't happened either).

I really enjoy writing inspiring quotes and reminders on the fridge to add a little character. It is way more fun than an ordinary fridge!

Sprout Update

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

It seems like just yesterday that I was planting my little sprouts! Back in April I decided to start an herb garden (I also planted some other flowers and vegetables, but those didn't really do so well! Who am I kidding? They are totally dead.) However, the herbs have done great...and it was the easiest thing ever! They are growing up so fast.

Until a couple of weeks ago I have left the cover over these little guys...they weren't really fitting anymore. I now have to water them more often than I did before, but they are still doing great! Eventually, I would like to move them into prettier planters! Don't worry, I will keep you posted!

I am loving...

Monday, June 18, 2012

So, I have a bit of an addiction...to nail polish! I love to admire all of the pretty shades when I am at the store. Right now I am really loving Essie nail polish. It goes on smooth and covers evenly. Plus...it comes in lots of great colors. I have added a few to my want list!

Check out all of the colors here.

The Road Back Home

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

I love visiting this dead end road. I really miss living in the country, and I would have to say that it has been the biggest adjustment I have had to make. Lately, I have been longing for a little house in the quiet country (with Dane of course!) Someday this dream will come true, and it will be wonderful!

Running

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Most of you know that I ran my first 5k in April. I started training in December, and I have been running ever since (not always as much as I would like.) Early this year Dane was training for a relay marathon, and it was easy to keep up with my running schedule with him running too. However, now he is not running regularly, and I am finding it hard to stick with it. I really want to increase my speed and distance, and I know that to do that I am going to have to work at it. I love running, and it is not something I want to stop doing. So, I had to come up with a plan!

Last summer I started training for a 5k, but for some reason I never finished the program. (I stopped in late September...maybe it was wedding planning.) Anyway, I really enjoyed the app that I was using, and I decided that I would give it a try again! Get Running is a couch to 5k app that I downloaded on my iPhone. The app sets up a schedule of 3 workouts per week, and it logs your progress. Plus, I love that the app works with my music!

Last night was the first time I have used the app since September, and I loved it just as much! I have started from the beginning, but I can already tell that I have made a lot of progress! I am looking forward to my next workout!

What workout apps do you use?

Lemonade Baby Shower

Monday, June 11, 2012

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of helping with my cousin's baby shower. Ceara and I have always been more like sisters, and I was very honored to help throw this shower for her. She is expecting a little girl, so we decided to decorate with pink and yellow! Pink lemonade, anyone?

I found this interesting take on the traditional guest book at On to Baby. I wanted Ceara to have something special to take from the celebration, and she really liked the signed frame. Instead of traditional baby shower games, we had guests fill out baby advice mad libs. We had a lot of fun organizing the shower, and I think that everyone had a great time! (Everyone was smiling...except for the brief moment she had us all in tears.)

I can't wait to meet you, Kinleigh!

Front Porch Trasformation (Part 2)

Sunday, June 03, 2012

We are still working on updating our front porch. We haven't made much any progress since my last post, but I have put some thought into how I would like the space to look once it is all done.

Currently the porch looks like this:

I hope you guys see as much potential as I do! I would like this space to be an entryway/mudroom. I want it to be inviting and comfortable. (It is the first space that people see when the come over). Here are some pictures that I found for inspiration.

I will keep you posted throughout this project!

DIY Earrings

Saturday, June 02, 2012

Sorry boys, this is another jewelry post. I love jewelry, and I have really been wanting to make my own for a while. A couple of days ago I found this blog that I am pretty much in love with! One of the older posts was a tutorial on how to make fabric button earrings. It was like fate. I loved the look of them and they were super simple to make.

I ended up finding two fabrics that I really liked, and I made two pairs of earrings. Check them out!

I think that these might just be the cutest things ever!
